Cultural Routines

Cultural Routines gives students clear actions to demonstrate their shared classroom values, norms, and aspirations.

Watch a video of an elementary (or middle) classroom that is doing a Brain Start Smart. This activity is part of Conscious Discipline to help students transition into the day. Some of the elements within the video might not be your style. That’s okay, and that’s not the focus. It is important to note the components that are present and why they exist.

What does the TEACHER say and do to help the students transition into their class?

What do the STUDENTS say and do? Take notes in your note catcher.

To be successful, you must plan your Brain Start Smart for the beginning of the day and mini ones during transitions throughout the day, strategically planning and incorporating these moments in order to help students shift their internal states to that of optimal learning and focus. We must be active participants in helping children maintain focus. The Brain Start Smart is a key player in this effort.

Using evidence from the video what happened that would help a student better transition into their day?

What impact does that have on a student?
